Coherent performance. Intensity modulation power and cost.

Phanofi is building a photonic engine that unlocks the performance of coherent optical technology for data center interconnects, at the power and cost envelope of intensity modulation. Today, data centers are forced to choose between bandwidth and efficiency. Coherent systems carry far more data but require expensive, power-hungry hardware. Intensity modulation is simple and affordable but is running out of room to scale.

Our DECODE project eliminates this tradeoff. Funded by the European Union's HORIZON-EIC-2024-TRANSITION-01 programme under grant agreement No. 101214083, DECODE is a 30-month project (1 May 2025 – 31 Oct 2027) delivering a complete photonic engine chipset that enables 400 gigabits per second per laser using simpler, lower-cost hardware than either approach achieves alone.

Simplified Technology
Our patented photonic circuit handles signal recovery directly on chip, replacing the expensive components coherent systems normally require with a passive optical detection architecture.
